Cardinals vs. Commanders GAMEDAY: How to Watch, Betting Odds, TV
The Washington Commanders host the Arizona Cardinals this afternoon in the season opener for both teams.
Josh Harris and his group are new owners of the franchise, and they're welcoming a new starting quarterback in Sam Howell and a new offensive coordinator in Eric Bieniemy.
It'll be a weekend of excitement for Washington as they face an old NFC East rival in the Cardinals, who will be without starting quarterback Kyler Murray. The season outlook for Arizona isn't good as it also ushers in a new era with new coach Jonathan Gannon.
"There has been a buzz all offseason about this team," top receiver and face of the franchise Terry McLaurin said. “To be honest, it only really matters if you come out and you win, and that’s our objective going against a Cardinals team who's going to come in and give us their best. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”
In place of Murray, starting under center for Arizona should be Josh Dobbs, who has been with the organization for less than three weeks after being acquired from Cleveland.
“It’s a new year and new players,” Gannon said. “I’m very pleased with all of them, truthfully, and especially Dobbs with that position because it’s so mental.”
Arizona is expected to be one of the worst - if not the worst - teams in the league, but optimism in Washington, D.C. is higher. Although it's in a stacked NFC East, the Commanders' defense can be a strength, and a playoff appearance is not out of the question in coach Ron Rivera's fourth season.
“Now we have to go out and do our job and play to the best of our abilities,” Rivera said. "This is what we’ve been working for, and this is what’s exciting and we’ve got to live up to it.”
