Commanders Injury Update: Jonathan Allen and Cole Holcomb Will Play Against Lions

Injury updates from Washington as they prepare to face the Detroit Lions in Week 2
In this story:

ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Commanders got off to a winning start by beating the Jacksonville Jaguars to start the year.

Next week, the team will travel to face quarterback Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions looking for their first 2-0 start since the 2011 season.

Friday, September 16: According to reports coming from ESPN's John Keim on Friday, Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen (groin) and linebacker Cole Holcomb (quad) will both play in Week 2 against the Lions.

Meanwhile, safety Kamren Curl (thumb) and guard Wes Schweitzer (hamstring) are both questionable.

While Curl hasn't been using his right hand in any catching drills this week, the safety says that doesn't necessarily automatically disqualify him from action on Sunday.

For the Lions, their final injury report reflected running back D'Andre Swift returning to practice on Friday and he is officially questionable with an ankle injury.

Three other Detroit players are also questionable: guard Jonah Jackson (finger), safety Ifeatu Melifonwu (hamstring), and cornerback Amani Oruwariye (back).

Center Frank Ragnow (groin/foot) did not practice all week and has officially been ruled out for Week 2.

Thursday, September 15: Following practice, the Commanders public relations department shared the following players were either limited or did not participate.

Did Not Practice: Guard Wes Schweitzer (hamstring)

Limited: Defensive tackle Jonathan Allen (groin), safety Kamren Curl (thumb), guard Trai Turner, linebacker Cole Holcomb (quad)

Full: Linebacker Jamin Davis (personal) and tight end Cole Turner (hamstring)

Holcomb is a new addition to the injury report this week, with one day of practice remaining before the team flies to Detroit on Saturday.

For the Lions, the following report was issued on Thursday afternoon.

Did Not Practice: Guard Jonah Jackson (finger), center Frank Ragnow (groin/foot) and running back D'Andre Swift (ankle)

Limited: Defensive end Michael Brockers (knee), offensive tackle Taylor Decker (calf), safety Ifeatu Melifonwu (hamstring), and cornerback Amani Oruwariye (back)

Full Participant: Linebacker Julian Okwara (hamstring)

Jackson's status on this report is a downgrade from Wednesday when he was a limited participant while Brockers and Decker were all upgraded compared to previous statuses.

Oruwariye is a new addition to the report for Thursday, making him someone to keep a close eye on Friday before the final game designations arrive.

Wednesday, September 14: One player who wasn't able to help his team on the field this past weekend is rookie tight end Cole Turner who has been dealing with a hamstring issue since around midway through training camp.

After Week 1, coach Ron Rivera expressed optimism Turner would be ready for Week 2, and starting the week as a full participant at practice, he may just fulfill that prophecy.

Getting Turner on the field would give the Commanders an offensive boost, but having a stable offensive line may be even more important going up against the blitz-happy Lions defense.

Guard Trai Turner (quad) was limited on Wednesday while Wes Schweitzer (hamstring) was unable to practice.

On the other side of the trenches defensive tackle Jonathan Allen (groin) was limited, and certainly wanted to do more than he did, but the team and coaches erred on the side of caution with their star and team captain.

Also limited was safety Kamren Curl (thumb), as he strives to get back on the field after missing Week 1.

Linebacker Jamin Davis was also limited on Wednesday, though his designation was communicated as a personal matter, not injury related.

The Commanders will keep moderating these injuries throughout the week, but there is a lot of optimism surrounding the players currently injured for their status on Sunday.

For the Lions, their first injury report of the week was a long one with defensive end Michael Brockers (knee), offensive linemen Taylor Decker (calf), Tommy Kraemer (back), and Frank Ragnow (foot/groin), and running back D'Andre Swift (ankle) all sitting out Wednesday's practice.

Guard Jonah Jackson (finger) and safety Ifeatu Melifonwu (hamstring) were both limited, and linebacker Julian Okwara (hamstring) was listed as a full participant to start the week.

The Commanders face the Lions at 1 p.m. Sunday in Detroit.

*This post will be updated daily as new injury updates become available, all leading to Week 2 when the Washington Commanders visit the Detroit Lions.
