Adrian Peterson is inactive for Redskins in Week 1

The future Hall of Famer will be a healthy scratch for the Week 1 clash against the Philadelphia Eagles

Washington Redskins running back Adrian Peterson will be inactive for the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. Head coach Jay Gruden looks to be opting for a heavy dose of the second-year running back Derrius Guice while making Peterson a healthy scratch.

At this point in time, it seems the veteran Peterson is nothing more than an insurance policy for the team. Because he does not participate on special teams' duties it makes it difficult to dress him as one of only 46 players on game day.

Redskin Maven wondered aloud whether or not Guice being named starter would lead to drama out of Peterson, who reports say was a concern of head coach Jay Gruden. The future Hall of Famer spoke on the topic earlier in the week that he was happy to do whatever to help the team win, but being inactive means he can't contribute.

Guice is coming off of a rookie season in which he never saw the field due to an ACL injury that required a total of four separate surgeries to clean up. It’s clear Washington feels comfortable with a full workload for Guice for the time being. He will be complemented in the backfield with running backs Chris Thompson and Wendell Smallwood.

Last season, Peterson led the team in rushing in Guice’s absence, being signed last August only after the rookie suffered his season ending injury. He went on to lead the team in rushing racking up over 1,000 yards on the ground and scoring seven touchdowns.
