Redskins fall to Eagles in season opener, 32-27

After an early lead, Washington fell back to earth in Philadelphia.

The Washington Redskins have lost the season opener to the Philadelphia Eagles 32-27. What started out as a great day for the Redskins and their fans, quickly went south after halftime. After racing out to a 17-0 lead behind the performance of quarterback Case Keenum, the Eagles went on to score 32 of the next 35 points of the contest.

The defense that shut the Eagles down early in the game suffered one too many setbacks. Between injuries to defensive end Jonathan Allen, cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and linebacker Cole Holcomb, they lacked the manpower. Several communication errors in the secondary allowed former Redskins receiver DeSean Jackson to get behind them, scoring two long touchdowns over 50 yards.

The offense that looked explosive behind the big plays of tight end Vernon Davis and rookie wide receiver Terry McLaurin petered out, not gaining a first down in the second half until a meaningless, last gasp drive in the fourth quarter with the game out of reach.

Washington returns home for next week's match-up against the Dallas Cowboys.
