Dallas Cowboys Draft Prospect, Texas Longhorns' T'Vondre Sweat Arrested for DWI
As the 2024 NFL Draft nears, former University of Texas defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat may have seen his stock take a considerable hit Sunday.
Sweat was booked into the Travis County Jail in Austin at 2:12 p.m. Sunday afternoon after being charged with driving while intoxicated, a Class B misdemeanor. Sweat met bond, which was $3,000, and was released shortly after 4 p.m., according to Austin's local NBC affiliate KXAN.
The 22-year-old Sweat spent the past five seasons on the Longhorns' defensive line, making 62 appearances with 18 starts.
This past season, he was a unanimous first-team All-American, was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and won the Outland Trophy given annually to college football's best interior lineman.
Sweat, who stands 6-4, 366 pounds, made 45 tackles, eight tackles for loss and two sacks across 14 games with eight starts in the middle of the Longhorns' defense.
As a result of his stout season, Sweat emerged as a suspected Day 2 draft pick with a chance to move into the back part of Round 1.
The in-state Dallas Cowboys, who struggled defending the run in spurts last season, made sense as a potential landing spot for Sweat, and the two sides met formally at the NFL Combine in late February.
And according to Sweat, the meeting - which included Paxton Anderson, one of his former teammates and the grandson of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones - was positive.
“It went great, actually,” Sweat said. “First, I got to give a shoutout to my guy Paxton. He was in there so that was pretty cool, you know, seeing him on the other side and not as my teammate. So that was pretty cool, but it went great.”
Will Sweat's arrest change the picture?
That part remains to be seen - but for now, Sweat's draft status is in flux ... and the Cowboys may have to reconsider their initial interest in the Huntsville, Texas, native.
