Dallas Cowboys Firing Mike McCarthy In-Season 'On the Table,' Says Shock Jock

Fox Sports pundit Craig Carton believes the Dallas Cowboys' 2024 season has the potential to "go south" in a hurry and could culminate in firing Mike McCarthy.

Could Mike McCarthy be asked to turn in his badge early? Craig Carton certainly appears to think so.

The Fox Sports shock jock personality was incensed over the Dallas Cowboys' inclusion at the top of the latest Super Bowl odds, which place the Pokes with the second-best chances (+1300) in the NFC, behind only the San Francisco 49ers (+500). That didn't sit well with Carton, who believes that the Cowboys could be in for turbulent times after a quiet offseason.

"You can't say the Cowboys are closer to winning the Super Bowl than the Cincinnati Bengals are. Heck, they're not even better than the (New York) Jets when it comes winning the Super Bowl," Carton said on his eponymous program on Tuesday. "They're not better than the (Philadelphia) Eagles when it comes to winning, or the Detroit Lions."

Carton acknowledges co-host and former NFL blocker Willie Colon's idea that an extension-less CeeDee Lamb could pave the way to an offensive breakout. But he also insists that the team currently constructed, one that did little to switch things up after its latest postseason disappointment, could veer toward the franchise's first outright losing seasons since 2020 in an effort that could "go south on everybody."

It could get to the point, Carton claims, where the head coach McCarthy is fired in-season. When Colon asks if that means McCarthy could be ousted mid-season, Carton renders the possibility "on the table."

"It's hanging right there in the balance," Carton said, acknowledging that the shortcomings of divisional foes from New York and Washington could offer a life preserver. "I think this Dallas Cowboys season can go that way just as easy as it can go that way."

Carton doesn't actually have any info here; he's simply filling a segment with "juice.'' The facts? Dallas under Jerry Jones has been notably reluctant to fire coaches in-season, doing so just once in over 60 years of action (Wade Phillips in 2010). Desperate times could call for desperate measures, however, and missing out on a championship with he current core talents would certainly be ground for assessing McCarthy's situation earlier than anticipated.
