‘A Different’ Dak? 'Back Up!' CeeDee Lamb Warns Cowboys Rivals

“He’s very aggressive and he’s looking for the deep ball now. It’s up there. So if you’re not gonna back up, this is a warning to everybody, if you’re not gonna back up, good luck!'' - CeeDee Lamb on Cowboys QB Dak Prescott.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has astutely made the point that when the national media needs something to talk about - maybe especially if it needs something negative to talk about - it turns to criticism of "America's Team.''

That doesn't mean the scrutiny itself is unfair. Nor does the scrutiny - if we're being fair - have to be negative. So when team owner Jerry Jones talks of the new "Texas Coast Offense'' being "Dak-friendly''? There's nothing negative there. When a singular highlight video on Twitter shows Prescott throwing an interception at training camp? The lack of context means there might be nothing negative there, either.

For a bigger, better picture of Dak at camp we go to wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who said that even within a new offense designed to "protect'' the quarterback - in every meaning of that word - Prescott is getting more aggressive in his throws and in his decisions during the practices ... and yes, Lamb is a fan of it.

“He’s very aggressive and he’s looking for the deep ball now,'' Lamb said via 105.3 The Fan. "It’s up there. So if you’re not gonna back up, this is a warning to everybody, if you’re not gonna back up, good luck!''

But what about the "horizontal'' aspects of the West Coast Offense? What about ensuring that Prescott is to be "careful'' after throwing a career-high 15 interceptions last season? What about coach Mike McCarthy's vow to run the ball more situationally?

“I’m not going to stop being aggressive,” Prescott said. “That’s who our coach is, and that’s who I am. That’s the confidence I’ve gained in myself, and I’ve worked so hard to be able to have this confidence and make the throws that I’m making.''

Prescott has guaranteed he'll "lessen'' that interception number, which mathematically is actually an easy thing to do. At the same time, he believes the Pro Bowler Lamb has a chance to be recognized as the NFL's best receiver - and that can't come without some downfield throws. So maybe defenses will be forced to "back up.'' And if this all works for Prescott and Lamb? Maybe critics will be forced to "back up,'' too.
