Bill Belichick Next Cowboys Coach? Jerry Jones Idea Floated by PFT

FRISCO - Once upon a time, in 1996, two football guys who didn’t really know each other happened to be at the same Aspen ski resort.

And the way Jerry Jones tells the story, Bill Belichick petitioned him for a job.

And now? Mike Florio at ProFootballTalk.com is projecting that 27 years later, history might repeat itself.

Florio's position: Patriots owner Robert Kraft is putting his legendary coach on the hot seat. He writes, "If Belichick doesn’t get back to the playoffs for the third time in four years, it could be over for Belichick in New England.''

Belichick fired and available to move to a new team in 2024? We don't know if that's true. But PFT is on a roll here ...

"The real question becomes whether another team would move immediately to hire him. ... So who would do it? The Cowboys? ...''

PFT mentions other potential landing spots here. But Florio is no dummy; he mentions the Cowboys first. (CowboysSI.com is also no dummy, by the way.)

But PFT sort of skips past the realities in Dallas. Florio writes of Belichick's next team being available to him because an organization will have "cleaned house'' to clear his path to power.

Coach Mike McCarthy might get fired some day. Personnel boss Will McClay, too? Far less likely. Jerry and Stephen Jones firing themselves? Um, no.

So Belichick, who will be 72 in the 2024 NFL season, would have to take a job that has a fraction of the organizational authority he's had in New England for decades (and for all of those Super Bowls).

Or Jerry would have to relinquish some power.

But there is this: Folks outside The Star may not realize it, but the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys is no puppet. Not Jimmy Johnson, not Bill Parcells, not Jason Garrett, not Mike McCarthy - who was pleasantly surprised to learn how deeply he'd be allowed to be involved in personnel, something he never had in Green Bay.

And if Parcells can come here (even if it was largely to help AT&T Stadium get financed and built)? Belichick, in wild theory, could, too.

And heck, he said so right on that mountain.

“Bill Belichick said, ‘I can coach. If you ever get an opportunity, don’t forget about me,'” Jones told us on 105.3 The Fan in 2019.

Belichick, who'd just been dumped by Cleveland, remembers the meeting ...

“Yeah, I was out in Snowmass,” Belichick said. “I was out there with the family, and Jerry, he’s got on a big white jacket with a blue star, coming off a couple Super Bowl victories out there. ... I have all the respect in the world for Jerry. He’s totally committed to winning. That organization’s committed to winning.''

Could this organization ever commit to Bill Belichick?

“I’ve thought about that many times,'' Jones said of the chance encounter. "You never know where you can find a great coach. You can find them in a ski checkout line sometimes.''
