'Blowout & Shutout Combo!' Cowboys Make History, Expose Clownish Giants in Week 1

Micah Parsons goofed up once, in the buildup to the Week 1 showdown, when he said, "The Giants aren't a walkover team.'' Man, did the Cowboys star turn out to be wrong, with Dallas' 40-0 road victory as the proof.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys essentially did everything right as they absolutely dominated the New York Giants on "Sunday Night Football'' in record-setting fashion, with a 40-0 final score that breaks a long-standing franchise record for a blowout/shutout combo.

But Parsons did goof up once, in the buildup to the Week 1 showdown, when he said, "The Giants aren't a walkover team.''

In fact, they are at this moment an embarrassment, incapable of matching the Super Bowl-hopeful Cowboys in any area. Want "all three phases''? You got it. Want "complementary football,'' as Dallas coach Mike McCarthy so often pushes for? You got it. Want McCarthy's "we need to win'' wish come true?

The Cowboys got that in every possible manner, with one of the most dominant defensive efforts in memory - with a blocked field goal for a TD, an interception return for another TD, three forced turnovers and seven sacks of New York QB Daniel Jones, and ...

Why are we so shocked? The Cowboys just beat the Giants for the fifth straight time and for the 12th in 13th meetings. Dak Prescott just beat the Giants for his 11th straight time. And 40-0 is a Dallas franchise record for a "blowout/shutout combo, topping a 1978 accomplishment over the Baltimore Colts.

In New York, the vibe was all about showing the football world that the Giants have elevated themselves to the level of NFC East bosses Dallas and defending NFC champion Philadelphia. That vibe is now gone ...

And the Cowboys are on exactly the sort of "all-time high'' that Dak said he was riding coming in.

Dallas was up 26-0 at halftime, at which point the concept of sitting starters started creeping into the minds of observers. And eventually, Dak and Micah and their ilk moved to the sideline to party in the New Jersey rain.
