Bounce-Back Dak? Chris Canty Not Sold on Cowboys QB Prescott; Here's Why
The Dallas Cowboys did everything they needed to in free agency. An offensive weapon was acquired, and the defense kept a host of starters while adding Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts.
Such has been the Cowboys' free agency dealings; many feel good about their chances heading into next season. Except for former Cowboy Chris Canty, as one issue remains ... Dak Prescott. But does he feel that Prescott will have a bounce-back year after an interception riddled last season?
"No, no, I don't," Canty said on ESPN's First Take. "Here's the thing, we haven't seen Dak Prescott have success without Ezekiel Elliott in his prime and or Kellen Moore be the offensive coordinator. I have a hard time having faith in a guy that has had 32 turnovers across 28 games over the last two years. That's a problem."
Changes to Dallas' offensive coaching staff during the offseason saw Kellen Moore be shipped out and head coach Mike McCarthy installed as the play caller, something he did in Green Bay.
With his West Coast Offense, the consensus is that McCarthy will try and simplify the offense for Prescott, thus not putting too much on Dak's shoulders after his interception-filled season last year.
But even with the new coaching change, Canty isn't sold on Prescott returning to his best form.
"The other problem that you're going to be dealing with is Mike McCarthy taking more control of this offense for a head coach who's had the most penalized team in all of football over the last two years," Canty said. "Color me skeptical when it comes to Dak Prescott being the best version of himself, with all of them being factors going into the 2023 season."
So, it appears the Cowboys already have at least one detractor of what Prescott and Dallas can achieve even before a single down is played in the new season.
After back-to-back poor playoff losses, Dallas addressed several issues with its roster, but for Canty, the looming issue continues to be Prescott at quarterback.
