Cowboys Camp Kicker Competition? Sign Michael Badgley

If the Cowboys were to sign Michael Badgley, would their chances of unearthing a “sure-bet” kicker increase? We’d say so.

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys are, to their credit, not pretending that the two kickers on the roster that will assemble for training camp mean some sort of “sure thing.”

Tristan Vizcaino? Dallas likes him, or he wouldn’t be here as a candidate to replace the departed playoff flop Brett Maher. But if Dallas was “sure”? It wouldn’t have signed USFL star Brandon Aubrey, the Plano native who was a professional soccer star before trying football for the first time two years.

If the Cowboys are looking to make a move up in terms of assuredness? Yes, another option just opened up to them. The Detroit Lions just released kicker Michael Badgley …

Badgley has bounced around the league throughout his five-year career, spending his first three seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers but splitting each of the last two years with multiple teams. In his career, he has made 81.7 percent of his field goals with a long of 59 yards, as well as 96.9 percent of his extra points.

In 12 games with Detroit last season, Badgley made 20 of his 24 field goals and all 33 of his extra points. Does that make him a lock as a job-winner in Dallas? Of course not.

But if the Cowboys were to sign Badgley, would their chances of unearthing a “sure bet” increase? We’d say so.
