Bryce Young: NFL 'Scared to Death of Drafting'; Is Dallas Cowboys Prototype a Must?

There are probably no "Aikmans'' in this draft; that Cowboys legend is a rare cat. But is there a Tua, a Wilson, a Kyler? And if Bryce Young is that, is it good enough - er, big enough?

FRISCO - Troy Aikman made it easy.

Aikman, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft, had it all. At 6-4, 220, he possessed the prototypical size for a pro QB - so perfectly prototypical that five decades later, the ideal dimensions for an NFL signal-caller haven't changed.

Smart. Classy. Competitive. Athletic (Aikman was drafted to Major League Baseball, too). Big arm. Big hands. But mostly ...

Ah, that 6-4, 220.

Now along comes top NFL quarterback prospect and Heisman-winning star from the Alabama Crimson Tide, quarterback Bryce Young ...

And we've got a problem.

“If I’m a GM, I’m scared to death of drafting him," TV scout Todd McShay said.

What's so scary?

Young, despite his larger-than-life performances in college, rolls into the 2023 NFL Combine in Indianapolis this week and ESPN's McShay is revealing that Young's official height has been measured at 5-10.5 ...

And McShay is horrified.

One of the biggest questions surrounding Young throughout the draft evaluation process has been his undersized frame, and it has long understandably raised some eyebrows from front offices across the league.

Those eyebrows surely go down to the Houston Texans, who, with the No. 2 overall pick, have a strong chance at landing Young. .. if they decide he's tall enough.

Is this really a thing? We can tell you that the present regime inside The Star, led by head coach Mike McCarthy, as a rule of thumb has no particular fondness for the little-guy QB, the belief being that there are simply too many limitations on such a player, especially in terms of vision and angles as a passer.

Young's height - or lack thereof - will make him one of the shortest quarterbacks in the NFL next season. And he of couse will be a QB in the NFL in 2023, maybe as a starter but at very least a starter in waiting for one of the teams at the very top of the NFL Draft ... most of whom are starving for quarterback talent.

There are probably no "Aikmans'' in this draft; that's a rare cat. But is there a Tua Tagovailoa, Miami's 6-0 QB? Is there a Russell Wilson, Denver's 5-11 QB? Is there a Kyler Murray, Arizona's 5-10 QB?

And if Bryce Young is that ... is that good enough - or, better said, big enough?

The central question here is, where is the line drawn? If Young was a half-inch taller, and was 5-11, would McShay and anybody else be "scared''?

We'll find out in April.
