‘Buy Into Us!’ Cowboys’ McCarthy Reveals ‘Championship Program’ Message to Fans

‘Buy Into Us!’ Dallas Cowboys Coach Mike McCarthy Reveals ‘Championship Program’ Message to Unhappy Fans

FRISCO - Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, on the morning  after learning that team owner will continue for one more year to buy into him, delivered a Thursday message to unhappy fans of “America’s Team.”

“We have an unbelievable fan base,” said the coach in the wake of a third straight early exit from the NFL playoffs. “They should be disappointed.”

But, he added, “We have established a championship program. It’s just not a world championship yet. …I know how to win. We will get over that threshold. I have total confidence, and that’s why I am standing here today. …

“I believe the direction, the leadership, everything is in place. I came to Dallas to win a world championship. …

“Buy into us.”

McCarthy said he and Jones met for longer than three hours Wednesday afternoon and “talked about a number of topics,” beginning with the disappointment of how the season ended and touching on “pretty much everything in the football program.”

McCarthy said the conversation included Jones “asking all the hard questions,” adding when quizzed by CowboysSI.com as to whether he entered the meeting with some trepidation about his job future, “I was in the moment.”

He also said, regarding his lame-duck status as he enters his fifth and final contractual year with no promise of an extension that was surely Jones’ previous plan: “I’ve been asked this for 20 years. I’ve never talked about player contracts, coaching contracts, and I won’t start today … I didn’t come here for a contract. I came here to win a championship.”

We also asked the Cowboys coach about possible common threads from some of this team’s notable losses to 49ers, Bills and Packers. McCarthy said each loss “is different” but indicated that deeper analysis is needed.

‘Raw & Numb’ Coach Mike McCarthy Boasts of Dallas Cowboys ‘Championship Program'

McCarthy revealed that he is “still raw right now. I’m still a little bit numb.” But he clearly intended to use this presser to send a positive message.

“I know the man I am and I know the coach I am,” he said. “We’re just getting started.”

And Cowboys Nation is left wondering about its “buy-in” investment level.
