Coach Hot Seat: Fair That Cowboys Mike McCarthy is 'Under Pressure'?
The Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has his fair share of detractors, and now, with him adding offensive play-caller to his duties, there is even more pressure on him to deliver.
After back-to-back 12-win seasons that have resulted in poor showings in the postseason (Dak Prescott's win over Tampa Bay being the outlier), pressure is on McCarthy to take this team to where many feel it belongs ... winning Super Bowls.
So, is the hot-seat-level pressure on McCarthy warranted? Former NFL quarterback Chris Simms doesn't think so.
“Is it fair that he’s on the hot seat?” Simms said on NFL NBC. “It is a weird one, I know it’s not perfect but I’m like, 'Damn, they did go 12-5 in the last two years, didn’t they? I mean they are one of the teams we talk about being one of the better teams in the NFC. That’s where I’m torn with that conversation.
"I do get sick of the piling on of McCarthy at times by everybody.”
Simms has a point. The Cowboys have been one of the better teams in the league the past two seasons, but ... only have a win against a Buccaneers team to show for it. The way in which Dallas has lost both its playoff games against the San Francisco 49ers in the last two years is likely the cause for the pressure heaped on McCarthy.
But with an offense that added Brandin Cooks and a fine defense that has added veteran Stephon Gilmore and drafted Mazi Smith, on paper, Dallas is a Super Bowl contender.
It is now McCarthy's show in Dallas, and he will get the plaudits when it goes right (hopefully) and cop the brunt of the heat when it goes wrong (along with owner Jerry Jones) ... but does he deserve to be on the coaching hot seat?
For many, if McCarthy "12-win-but-fails'' as in previous years with "his" system, then in theory, it might just cost him his job in Frisco.
