Dallas Cowboys Icon Deion Sanders Reacts To Female College Player History
FRISCO - Deion Sanders knows a little something about being a history-making groundbreaker. So it comes as no surprise that he's a supporter of what a young lady named Haley Van Voorhis is accomplishing in having made history on Saturday by becoming the first woman to play a position other than kicking during an NCAA football game.
"I’m happy for her," said Sanders, the Dallas Cowboys and NFL icon now overseeing a turnaround of the University of Colorado football team in his high-profile role of "Coach Prime.'' "I believe in equality not just of ethnicity, but gender as well. So I’m all for it. God bless her."
Sanders made history of all sorts during his Pro Football Hall of Fame playing career, including starring in the NFL and in Major League Baseball at the same time. So he "gets it'' ... even as he was careful to express his thoughts on the 5-6, 145-pounder's safety.
"I’m concerned about her safety,'' Sanders said. "I want to make sure she’s safe. But I’m sure if she put on the pads, she understands what goes along with that.''
Indeed, she seems to, as Van Voorhis - who was a captain on her high school football team - played one play for Shenandoah University, a Division III program in Virginia, and on Saturday blitzed the opposing quarterback and earned a hurry.
"Amazing moment! Living the dream with no better group of teammates and coaches," Van Voorhis wrote on social media. "I owe it to all my supporters, and especially all the women of the game who paved the way for me and countless others."
Haley called it "amazing.'' Deion called it "awesome.'' ... and the two of them, with something in common, each have it right.
