Cowboys safety Xavier Woods has high-ankle sprain; Dallas holding tryouts at DB, linebacker and receiver
FRISCO - Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says of safety Xavier Woods and his high-ankle sprain, "Only the Man Upstairs really knows how much time he’ll miss.'' But the Cowboys are proceeded as if they'll need help at the position - and at other spots as well.
Some reports are suggesting Woods, who sustained the ankle injury Sunday at Washington, could miss a month to six weeks; I'm told Dallas' medical people have yet to make that determination and indeed, Jones suggests to 105.3 The Fan that those reports are premature.
Obviously, though, the availability of Woods (hurt in the final series of the win at Washington) for this week’s game against Miami is in doubt. Darian Thompson could be the "next man up'' here, though the Dallas coaching staff thinks highly of rookie sixth-rounder Donovan Wilson, the Texas A&M product.
Wilson and Thompson, who can both also help on special teams, have battled through minor injury issues but should be ready to work this week.
Also ready to help: Packers ex Josh Jones, a street free agent who is working out here at The Star today. I'm told Dallas is also planning to host a handful of linebackers, and due to the knee injury to receiver Michael Gallup (and a possible two- to-four-week absence), the Cowboys are working out street free agent wideouts Quincy Adeboyejo and DaMarkus Lodge, per NFL Network.
More transactions are coming, for certain, due to Robert Quinn's coming activation. Jerry also mentioned this, and told 105.3 The Fan that he's not giving up on Taco Charlton.
"He's got a lot of things going for him,'' Jones said. "Overall, he can step out there and play winning football for us. I'm not in any way dismissing Taco."
