Cowboys Trade of Michael Gallup: Has Dallas Found A Landing Spot in Carolina Panthers for Receiver?

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys have cemented in their plan to say goodbye to receiver Michael Gallup, who has been granted permission to seek his own trade ... and who one way or another is scheduled to be off the Dallas roster in the coming days. ...

And maybe Gallup has already found himself a suitor.

Gallup experienced a breakout year in his second season of 2019, with 66 receptions for 1,107 yards. But he tore his ACL in 2021, and even with the injury Dallas gave him a five-year, $57.5 million contract - a move that did not work out.

The third-round draft pick from 2018 has experienced a drastic decline in production, as last season he had career-lows in yards (418) and touchdowns (two) and the second-fewest catches (34).

Gallup now has a cap hit of $13.85 million for 2024. A trade doesn't actually provide much relief there. A post-June 1 designated release would give Dallas $9.5 million in 2024 cap space at that time, with the impact spread over two years.

Gallup's search for a new team, according to ESPN, has piqued the interest of the Carolina Panthers, though given the hard numbers - the idea of Carolina picking up Gallup's salary, plus Dallas saving so little, plus MG's lack of production - we are skeptical about any team wishing to sacrifice anything for the player, knowing he's on the verge of being cut.

'Fastest Human!' Could Cowboys Draft Combine Record-Setter from Texas?

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has tried to be coy about the plan ... but it's never been much of a secret.

“We don’t have a decision that we would like to talk about right now,” Jones said recently. “It’s one that we will be going over with him. Nothing we would say without him being involved. We need to sit down and go over stuff with him before we talk about what we’re going to do with him.”

We know what Dallas is about to do with good-soldier Gallup ... though we would add that there remains a possibility that the Cowboys could someday bring him back under the terms of a new, cheap deal.
