Tyron Smith Retirement Rumors? Cowboys Meet Today To Re-Sign Future Hall-of-Famer
The Dallas Cowboys, as we've reported previously, are not going to lose All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith to retirement before the 2024 season.
But that doesn't mean they might not lose the future Hall-of-Famer to free agency, which is why the club is already putting down the groundwork to bring back the 33-year-old standout. Not only do they hope to extend their star players, the team has several pending free agents. Most notably, their long-time star left tackle Tyron Smith is due to hit free agency.
"We'll be sitting down with him and looking at what it looks like for him to stay here,'' Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said in a media visit at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
We know Dallas is meeting with some agents today in Indy, and ESPN is now reporting that a meeting on Tyron is on the agenda.
Smith has played 13 seasons for the Cowboys, and when healthy has always played at an elite level. Arguably the best left tackle of his generation, he has five All-Pro selections, and eight Pro Bowl selections. He most recently was picked as a second-team All-Pro for the 2023 season.
Health issues are a concern, and they should be - though his 13 games played in 2023 is a high-water mark for the last five years.
Tyron to Leave Cowboys, Sign With Mahomes' Chiefs?
One guess at his market value has Tyron at $7 million for a one-year deal. That seems low to us, though Smith's truly familial relationship with the Joneses could help a team-friendly deal to be forged, as was the case a year ago, when Smith took a cut in base salary to remain in Dallas.
Should he open himself up to bidders? There is already buzz that the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will show interest.
But first? The Cowboys need that Tyron sit-down.
