Cowboys Who Should Be Fired? 'Add Me To the List!' Says Dak Prescott In Support of Mike McCarthy
The jokes will write themselves, but for the first time, Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy’s job truly feels in danger. Three consecutive years of 12-5 football, with just a single postseason win – over an 8-9 Tampa Bay Buccaneers team – to show for it.
Another early-playoff exit. Another disappointing end to a once-promising season. Will owner Jerry Jones finally hit the reset button?
After the game, quarterback Dak Prescott defended his head coach.
“I’ve had the season I’ve had because of him,” Prescott said. “This team has had the success we’ve had because of him.”
McCarthy’s “Texas Coast Offense'' struggled out of the gate, but after a Week 7 bye, the Cowboys became a different team. They won six of seven after the week off, and the offense’s adjustments – most notably getting receiver CeeDee Lamb more involved – paid dividends.
Prescott’s second-half efforts would launch him into the MVP conversation. He would finish the regular season with 4,516 yards, a league-leading 36 touchdowns, and just nine interceptions. It may have been the best season of his career and yet, once again, it didn’t matter.
The Green Bay Packers came into AT&T Stadium as the seventh seed and flew home as victors. The Packers won 48-32, at one point leading 48-16.
On the biggest stage of the season, Prescott turned in one of his worst performances of the year. He threw for 403 yards, three touchdowns, and two scores, compiling meaningless stats as he tried to will Dallas to a miracle win.
It was an uncharacteristically poor performance in a game that could live on in Jones’ mind as contract negotiations loom. His job, like McCarthy's, could come into question. If the Cowboys are taking a long look at McCarthy, Prescott implied he deserves that same treatment.
“Add me to the list in that case,” Prescott said.
Cowboys Fire McCarthy? Jerry Jones Reacts To Playoff Loss with Statement
That's a valiant take. But it's not that easy. Prescott's employment here has cap-related ties; McCarthy's does not.
What else is there to say? Dallas’ franchise quarterback gives them a better chance to win than essentially any passer that could possibly replace him. But through different supporting casts and coaches, it hasn’t been enough.
It’s an important offseason for Jones, the Cowboys, and those in leadership positions for America’s Team. Sunday’s performance shouldn’t have anyone confident in their job security. ... with Dak offering up his head to the chopping block right next to McCarthy's.
