Dak Reveals 'Cowboy For Life' Thoughts: ‘Just The Beginning’

Dak Prescott talks here at The Star to commemorate and celebrate his new four-year, $160 million contract ... along with a look at his potential "Cowboy For Life'' status.

FRISCO - Dak Prescott got virtually everything he asked for here, including, as he noted during his Wednesday press conference here at The Star to commemorate and celebrate his new four-year, $160 million contract ... "Cowboy For Life'' status.

Said owner Jerry Jones: “If I’ve ever been proud of someone who has taken advantage  of me financially it’s the guy sitting next to me."

Well, OK, maybe it's not for "life.'' It's not even for the six years it is billed as being, the last two years being "dummy years'' used for accounting purposes. Nor is it the five years Dallas once proposed.

But Dallas will not once again place the franchise tag on the Pro Bowl quarterback, which would've meant the Cowboys using the $37.7 million tag, and dealing with all the uncertainty that would have come with that.

Instead, "certainty'' is in place. For both sides. And so is a big step toward "Cowboy for Life.''

“Through it all,” Dak said, “through the two years (of negotiations), there was never a doubt in my mind that I’d wear that star for life.”

Added owner Jerry Jones: "I knew Dak wanted to be here and no place else.”

We knew agent Todd France figured to be asking for $40 million APY, and Dak got that. And he got his four years. And he got the "no-tag'' clause we wrote about early Monday. So there could be "dark'' at the end of the tunnel here. Or there could be an eventual renegotiation, especially if Dak and the Cowboys are right about each other.

Said owner:Jones: “If I’ve ever been proud of someone who has taken advantage of me financially, it’s the guy sitting next to me."

The star quarterback suggested he never really had too much doubt about continuing his childhood dream to play QB for the Cowboys, and his behavior throughout this process demonstrated that. He's been here at The Star on a regular basis, rehabbing with Cowboys trainers. (And that the rehab is going well. See below.)

His comments - or lack of them - demonstrated the same. The NFL is presently full of unhappy campers who are also star QBs. Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson. Prescott never wanted to be in that particular club.

“I’m excited to be here and never leave,” Dak said. “This is my home. I’m a Cowboy. This is only the beginning.”
