Cowboys ‘Always Looking’ at New Contracts for CeeDee Lamb, Trevon Diggs, Stephen Jones Insists

CeeDee Lamb and Trevon Diggs? The two standouts are due Cowboys contract extensions, though they shouldn’t be lumped into the same category as QB Dak Prescott.

The Dallas Cowboys, as a general rule, seem to prefer to “let the market play out” as opposed to being preemptive when it comes to early re-do’s in young stars eligible for big-money extentions.

Is Cowboys COO Stephen Jones about to oversee a change in that policy?

“You’re always looking at something like that,” Jones told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday. “Obviously, they’re in our plans long-term.”

The “theys” in question this offseason as Jones and his front office work to maintain what Dallas believes is a Super Bowl-contending core?

CeeDee Lamb and Trevon Diggs.

The two standouts are due contract extensions, though they shouldn’t be lumped into the same category as QB Dak Prescott.

And why not? Well, extending Prescott is part of an in-place plan that can save about $22 million in cap room for Dallas in 2023.

But extensions for Lamb and Diggs? Those are going to be costly … with the argument in favor of being proactive being this:

As a first-round pick, Lamb's contract has a fifth-year option worth $19.8 million for the 2024 season. Dallas can sit on that with contractual control … but a $20 million APY deal for the receiver is inevitable.

As a non-first-round pick, Dallas does not hold on Diggs a fifth-year option and has one year remaining on his contract. What’s his market value? We will be a $15 million deal annually is inevitable for the cornerback.

It’s been written that there are “risks” in these extensions. But both Lamb and Diggs have established that they are premium talents, both with consecutive Pro Bowls on their resumes.

Waiting to pay them will simply cost Dallas more money … so this time, maybe “always looking” will result in the cowboys “actually doing.”
