Cowboys Should Sign Julio Jones, Landry, Golladay or Watkins to Fill 'Biggest Need,' Says Yahoo

The Dallas Cowboys' offseason moves to bolster their firepower in the offensive box score wren't enough to fully impress critics.

Ironically enough, the Dallas Cowboys' quest to find big gainers came up a few yards short in the eyes of some critics.

Those within the Cowboys organization would probably say it's their kicker, but a list from Yahoo! Sports detailing the biggest remaining need of every NFC team says that their receivers' room remains one of the shallowest areas on the depth chart, even after the NFL Draft.

"The Cowboys are one injury away from being in the same wide receiver predicament they were a year ago when they had to sign T.Y. Hilton off the street," Tyler Greenawalt writes. "CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, and Brandin Cooks are a solid trio, but there isn’t anyone behind them that can play meaningful snaps in a pinch. There are plenty of veteran options in free agency who could be a better stop-gap than Hilton was in 2022."

Greenawalt challenges the Cowboys to look at the ledgers of Pro Bowls past, urging them to add Julio Jones, Kenny Golladay, Jarvis Landry, or 2019 Super Bowl champion Sammy Watkins.

Many have pegged receiver as the Cowboys' biggest problem, especially with Gallup's injury issues (missing 11 games over the last two seasons) and quarterback Dak Prescott throwing a league-high/career-worst 15 interceptions. While they retain a lot of firepower from an offense that put up the fourth-most points in football, the backup catchers' unit consisting of Simi Fehoko, Jalen Tolbert, and KaVontae Turpin united for only 45 yards last year. Dallas also lost veteran target Noah Brown and the career-best 555 yards and three scores he tallied last year.

Trading for Cooks was one of the Cowboys' biggest moves of the offseason but they made few headline-grabbing adjustments in the receivers' room beyond that. The biggest post-Cooks addition was seventh-round choice Jalen Brooks, who joins a plethora of undrafted freshmen.

Still, we can assure you Dallas thinks the Lamb/Cooks/Gallup trio is something far above “solid,” as Yahoo calls it.

While organized team activities are a little too close for the Cowboys to integrate anyone into their system by then, we will say this, without breaking down (for now) the individual strengths and weaknesses of the foursome listed, the Cowboys will be giving chances to Tolbert and that level of guys, and then likely to their next level of candidates made up of UDFAs, before they go the “veteran scrap heap” route.
