Cowboys Biggest Roster Need? Call Kicker Robbie Gould in '49ers Warfare' - Today!

The Cowboys have addressed several needs this offseason, but there is one glaring spot that has thus far been neglected - a kicker.

The Dallas Cowboys have had a great offseason thus far, but there is still one spot on the roster that needs urgent addressing ... and it's one that reared its ugly head in the postseason last year.

Brett Maher's second go-around with the Cowboys was going swimmingly until it wasn't ... in the biggest spot of the year. We don't need to rehash the efforts against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wildcard Round that saw him miss four extra-point attempts in a row.

With the kicker position an area of weakness, NFL.com's Marc Sessler wants Dallas to pick up the phone for a veteran who is free (well, not "free,'' because he might cost $4 million APY, but) ...

"Let's not ignore special teams," Sessler writes. "The only kicker on the roster right now is Tristan Vizcaino, a fellow with a whopping 12 career field-goal attempts. Why not call up Gould after his break with the Niners? Yes, he's crossed the 40-year mark but remains one of the game's clutch booters. It would shore up a weak spot and provide Dallas with a dash of psychological warfare when it invariably meets the Niners all over again in January."

We can hear our own Mike Fisher screaming vindication, as this has been the main area of focus he has been asking for. ... but we give credit to Sessler for a new angle we hadn't thought of ...

"Psychological warfare!''

Last season, it was going so well for Maher until it wasn't, and against the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round, Dallas was already mentally hamstrung by Maher's efforts against the Buccaneers.

Maher made two field goals at Levi's Stadium but had his first extra point blocked (of course), but it was missing anyway and thus, Maher's performances in the postseason have ultimately led to him no longer being on the Dallas roster.

Could that change? Possibly, but ...

With Gould now on the street, should Jerry pick up the phone? The answer is an overwhelming yes, given how much easier life would have been with a "clutch" kicker in the playoffs. And - given that Dallas' last two seasons have ended with losses to Gould's Niners - the answer is "yes'' to "psychological warfare,'' too.
