Cowboys Woes: Could WRs Be A Dak Prescott 'Problem'?

The Dallas Cowboys are counting on bounce-backs from Brandin Cooks and Michael Gallup. Are these good bets?

The Dallas Cowboys have on paper given Dak Prescott an elite receiving unit for 2023, with the move to trade for Brandin Cooks the last-puzzle-piece add.

But what if it doesn't? Along comes a suggested scenario in which Dallas - due to failure among its wideouts - at back at Square One with its wideouts.

"[Cooks] is a player that is on the backside of his career. He had an off year in 2022," SBNation wrote. "The case is made that he was playing with very ineffective quarterbacks, but we should be very cautious about expecting him to rebound to the 1,000+ yard receiver he has been for most of his career."

Cooks has nine NFL seasons under his belt, and the hope is that his recent decline in production was just due to a bad team fit in Houston rather than his age.

But there is a chance, we suppose, that all the "real speed'' that's being talked about by Dak Prescott and others as they work with Cooks could fade. He'll be 30 years old when the season kicks off, meaning he's no spring chicken. Could his age be catching up to him?

Again, we don't see it this way. Nor do the Cowboys. But as long as we're letting SBNation hand out wet blankets ...

"Michael Gallup also had a poor season last year,” they write. “He was slow recovering from his injury late in 2021, and never got to 100%. The assumption is made that he is going to bounce back, but that still has to be demonstrated on the field.”

Hope is a powerful thing. There is hope that Gallup can get back to the 1,000-yard mark, but there's a reasonable chance that injuries have lowered his ceiling.

At any rate, CeeDee Lamb is the WR1 and makes a strong case as one of the best in the league. But it's still not proven that Cooks and Gallup can be consistent options behind him.

"These things may not go badly in this department for the Cowboys, but that is still an assumption. If either Gallup or Cooks has a hiccup, it is a problem," the site concluded.

The Cowboys could have a three-headed monster at receiver next year; that’s their plan. , but there's a real chance things turn sour for the wideouts.
