Cowboys BREAKING: Aldon Smith Sentenced to Year In Jail; 'One of the Saddest Deals' - Source

Former NFL star Aldon Smith, who got a second chance with the Dallas Cowboys, will now spend a year in jail.

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys are proud of their work with players who represent "reclamation projects,'' and former NFL star Aldon Smith was one of those. But sadly, Smith's issues with substance abuse and behavior continue and now he has been sentenced to one year in jail, according to a report from TMZ Sports.

Smith was out of football due to suspensions for a half-decade before making his return to the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 before once again falling victim to his demons and eventually again falling out of the league.

Said a source from inside The Star who developed a positive relationship with Smith while he was here: "This one is one of the saddest deals.''

Smith, now 33, was issued a felony DUI charge following a 2021 arrest at a California freeway offramp after he rear-ended another vehicle, which was followed by his attempt to allegedly bribe the other driver to not call the police.

According to the Mercury News, court records showed that when police did arrive, they found two empty bottles of hard alcohol in Smith’s vehicle.

Smith opted to decline a field sobriety test on the scene but later was tested and registered a blood-alcohol content level of .288 - three times the legal limit.

Smith was an immediate star when he entered the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers as the No 7 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft; he registered 25.5 sacks in his first two seasons and was an All-Pro in 2012. But he has dealt with a litany of legal issues, including three other DUI convictions, domestic violence charges and battery charges. He recorded five sacks for coach Mike McCarthy's Cowboys team in 2020 but faded late in the season, sources told CowboysSI.com at the time, due to his struggles with efforts toward sobriety.

Friends of Smith's have long worried about his safety as a result of his mental and emotional challenges.

He has been suspended from the NFL on three occasions, one of those an indefinite suspension.
