Cowboys ‘Blow It Up’? Coach Mike McCarthy Play-Calling for His Job?
Do the staff moves by Mike McCarthy mean the Dallas Cowboys' boss is fighting for his coaching future?
Letting go of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore on Sunday and taking back the play-calling for himself goes back to a vow McCarthy made to himself near the end of his tenure with the Green Bay Packers.
"I'll never do that again," McCarthy said about relinquishing control of the offense back in 2016.
But he did do it when he first came to Dallas, with the now-Chargers-bound Moore already in the building and a favorite of the Jones family.
This week's moves by the Cowboys to let go of eight assistant coaches, though, has McCarthy going retro ...
And maybe, McCarthy simply wanting to control his own fate.
"The captain must go down with his ship''? Something like that ... though obviously it is McCarthy's plan to be at the wheel to help the ship stay afloat and excel in 2023.
In Dallas, McCarthy has proven himself a (regular-season) winner, getting the Cowboys to the playoffs in two of his three seasons. But he has yet to find the formula to end the Super Bowl drought.
McCarthy coached the 'Boys to a second consecutive 12-win season. That's a resume highlight. But as he now builds a Dallas staff that is truly "his,'' the responsibility to advance the program nearer the Super Bowls is "his'' as well.
And now "Captain McCarthy'' is at the wheel.
