Cowboys Controversial 'Comp': Is Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud 'The Next Dak Prescott'?
FRISCO - NFL scouts simply cannot resist using "comps'' as a foundation for opinion-giving on prospects. "Comparisons'' make it easier for all eyes to envision what a player might become.
As the 2023 NFL Draft approaches, one scouting eye offers up a rather controversial opinion on Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud and his NFL comp ...
Dak Prescott.
Stroud received a comparison to the Dallas quarterback via ESPN’s Matt Miller, with part of the thinking being Dak's pocket presence.
“CJ Stroud one my favorite players in the entire draft class. He has great accuracy to all levels of the field,” Miller said. “He is really a wide receiver’s best friend the way he throws a catchable ball. There’s more athleticism than a lot of people realize.
"CJ Stroud I think comes in right away as a starter and elevates the team.”
As it happens, the Cowboys share that high opinion of Stroud - but Dallas, selecting at No. 26, is of course going to be a half-dozen slots shy of being able to pick him; Stroud is projected by many to be one of the top two picks in the NFL Draft.
Meanwhile, there will certainly be some Dak critics who view the comparison as something less than flattering, especially after Prescott just got done leading the NFL in interceptions. But the fact is, Dak was a fourth-round pick back in 2016 and his body of work since then has been impressive - and if Stroud can truly match Prescott in intangibles, the Ohio State QB will enter the NFL with an important foundation.
Stroud was extremely productive at Ohio State, throwing for 8,123 yards and 85 touchdowns. Any team drafting him will look for Stroud to keep performing at a high level. While it’ll be hard for Stroud to truly emulate Prescott’s career, his comparison shows just how high the NFL is on the former Ohio State star.
