Cowboys Dak Prescott Scouts WR Brandin Cooks After Private Workout: ‘Real Speed’

New Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Brandin Cooks impressed quarterback Dak Prescott with his speed during a recent throwing session.

Count Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott among those believing that newly-acquired wide receiver Brandin Cooks is ready to enliven the team’s offense in 2023.

Dallas surrendered a fifth-round pick in 2023 and sixth-round pick in 2024 to secure the services of the former Houston Texans wideout in March. While Prescott is no stranger to leading some high-octane scoring units during his seven years with the club, he apparently sees something special in his new teammate already. In fact, he shared his first impressions of Cooks during his recent appearance on The Adam Schefter Podcast

While he was hesitant to share an abundance of details, the Cowboys quarterback was clearly impressed by his new target’s skill set — especially his speed.

“Got a good little throwing session in today,” Prescott said. “Got to throw with B. Cooks; it’s going well.”

A ritual for the Cowboys under Prescott is participation in workouts at his North Texas home; he's got his own football field we've taken to calling "the Dak-Yard.'' We assume Cooks is making apperances,

“It’s exciting, I’ll say that,'' Dak said. "It was very exciting to throw with him today. The guy is different. That is real speed.”

Cooks finished the 2022 campaign with 57 receptions for 699 yards and three touchdowns as the Texans went 3–13–1. The Oregon State product led the team in receptions and receiving yards. While those numbers may not leap off the stat sheet, Cooks has maintained his curb appeal. The 29-year-old has been a productive receiver throughout his nine-year career. He has amassed 630 catches for 8,616 yards and 49 touchdowns in 132 regular-season games.

As such, he is expected to become a solid pass-catching option for Prescott, complementing top wideout CeeDee Lamb. He will also serve as a multi-purpose option alongside receivers Michael Gallup, Jalen Tolbert and KaVontae Turpin. His ability to use his speed to create separation from his defenders should allow him to settle into the role vacated by former Cowboys (and current Cleveland Browns) wide receiver Amari Cooper, due to his trade in March 2022.

"The guy is different''? That is indeed the hope for Brandin Cooks ... and it's starting now, with private workouts with his very impressed new QB.
