Cowboys Contract Talks; QB Dak Prescott 'Surprise' Coming?

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott signed a four-year $160 million contract in March and carries a $26.8 cap hit in 2023.

The Dallas Cowboys have made it clear that quarterback Dak Prescott is part of their long-term plan. Postseason success and injury problems aside, Dallas wants to keep the 29-year-old signal caller until he retires. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made clear the reasoning in a recent interview featuring our Mike Fisher when Fish asked Jones if the reason for the extension plan is about Dak's competency or about needing to be cap-compliant.

"Both,'' Jones said frankly.

After signing a four-year, $160 million deal in March, Prescott will carry $26.8 million in 2023 before blossoming to a $59.5 million cap hit the following year. Thus, the Cowboys' plan to re-do.

ESPN NFL Insider Dan Graziano recently wrote a piece addressing the “biggest” quarterback questions for all 32 teams entering this season, with the potential of Dallas extending its quarterback at the top of the list.

"If the Cowboys don't extend Prescott beyond 2024, they are effectively committing to carrying that cap number and making Prescott prove he deserves a new deal," Graziano wrote. "They want him to be a Cowboy for his entire career, and I think it would be very surprising if they didn't do an extension this offseason that knocked down that 2024 cap number and made it clear to the world that Prescott's future in Dallas is not in question."

Prescott has said he's leaving all contract talks to his agent, that he "trusts'' the Cowboys, and wants to strictly focusing on winning football games. So when ESPN uses the phrase "very surprising,'' their info coordinates nicely with what we've already reported, with a direct quote from Jerry Jones.

How "great'' is Dak Prescott? To many, that answer is not clear. Having to pay him on the path to finding out? There are no "surprises'' there.
