Cowboys QB Dak Prescott Keys Mental Health Awareness Month
FRISCO - Some of the most powerful sports unions in the country are teaming up for the month of May to raise awareness for Mental Health Awareness Month. And Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is a large part of it.
Prescott went public in 2020 about his struggle with mental health after the death of his brother and, earlier in his life, his mother. Prescott indicated the isolation from COVID quarantines added to his anxiety.
“I obviously got the help that I needed and was very open about it,” he said at the time. “I think that’s why I was fortunate enough to get over it, as not all of us are.”
The NFL Players Association, National Basketball Players Association, National Hockey League Players' Association, MLB Players Association, MLS Players Association and Women's National Basketball Players Association will all work together to promote the cause and invest resources to improve mental health for the professional athlete community.
″‘MentalHealthisMAYnstream’ will advance the national and global conversation around mental health and wellness and relate it to the experiences of athletes at every level of competition,” a joint statement from the organizations said.
Athletes around the globe have expressed struggles with mental health, and it's now considered to be as much a priority in the professional athlete community as physical health is.
This month-long campaign hopes to normalize mental health by players opening up about their own issues as well as providing help and resources from experts.
The leagues will also utilize inspirational stories from athletes and mental health leaders.
