Ranking Cowboys Dak Prescott in NFC: Is 'Consistently Good' Enough?
The NFC, for some, only has one star quarterback in Jalen Hurts, but let's not forget that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott calls the NFC home as well. Having divided opinion ever since he entered the league in 2016, there are some sections of the media that don't rate Prescott highly as a quarterback.
But we have found one in former NFL player turned analyst Emmanuel Acho who ranked Dak as the second-best quarterback in the NFC. But why?
“Dak Prescott is consistently good,” Acho said on FS1's Speak. “If he starts the entirety of the season, he does not have a losing season. He has commanded multiple No. 1 offenses. He has had No. 1 offenses that are top 10 in passing and rushing. I have to respect the consistency of (jersey) No. 4.”
Acho's list comprises of Jalen Hurts at No. 1 (no surprises there), Dak at No. 2, Matthew Stafford (No. 3), Jared Goff (No. 4), and Geno Smith (No. 5).
"Consistently good" is what Acho calls Prescott. That sounds about right. But let's dissect that a little more.
Since entering the league in 2016, Prescott is ninth in passing yards (24,943), 11th in completion percentage (66.6) and eighth in touchdowns (166), and is joint fifth in wins with 61 (just one behind Russell Wilson and six behind Aaron Rodgers).
So Prescott is top-10 in most key quarterback stats, and that represents the consistency Acho is talking about. Of course, there were his league-leading 15 interceptions last season, which can't be ignored, but what also can't be overlooked is the consistent level of Dak's play. While there have been ups and downs, for the most part, Acho's argument is that to some degree we know what we are getting from Prescott on a weekly basis.
While some may say that having Prescott as the second-best quarterback in the weakened NFC is a low bar. But we say it is fair to have him ranked there based purely off, as Acho says, Dak's consistency.
