NFL QB Tiers: Where's Cowboys Dak Prescott Rank? (Hint: Too Low)
Should Dallas Cowboys leader Dak Prescott feel slighted? Or aggravated. Or should he bother to notice that there a little bit of Dak hate floating around the media landscape?
No one can deny his league-leading interception total last year or his relative struggles to win playoff games (though critics do seem to forget his successful five-TD torching for Tampa Bay last year).
But in CBS Sports' quarterback tier list, Dak just feels downright disrespected here. Let's go through the tiers.
Tier 1: Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen. No real arguments here. However, we have often pointed out that there isn't that big of a stat difference between Dak and Allen.
Tier 2: Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Trevor Lawrence, Jalen Hurts. All of the above - with Lamar already owning an MVP trophy - are seen as the "next stars" of the league, and we can see why Prescott might have been left out of this tier. All have some combination of star power, high draft status and/or accomplishments.
But there is a world where Prescott could have been included in this tier based on his production since entering the NFL compared with those above.
Tier 3: Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Daniel Jones, Matthew Stafford, Deshaun Watson, Tua Tagovailoa, Aaron Rodgers.
This is where Prescott - and smart football watchers - can feel aggravated. Dak's 2022 season, even with the interceptions, saw him accomplish at least as much as the guys in this group. To not put Dak here? That is a genuine beard-scratcher.
CBS Sports rates this group as young stars mixed with those who have won at the highest level. Wilson, Stafford, and Rodgers have a Super Bowl win, but Dak has had better production than the rest. And Wilson is coming off a horrible here, Stafford an injured year and Rodgers a mediocre year.
Since being drafted in 2016, Dak (61) has one fewer win than Wilson (62) despite playing 12 fewer games than Wilson. Dak has six fewer than Rodgers (67) despite playing seven fewer games than Rodgers. Prescott has more TDs than Watson and only four fewer than Stafford.
Tier 4: Jared Goff, Dak Prescott, Geno Smith, Kirk Cousins, Ryan Tannehill, Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo. This is where Dak lands. We aren't sure why Prescott keeps getting pushed down into the mud. Questioning his performances in playoff games or that he hasn't gotten Dallas over the "hump" to an NFC Championship game is fair game. However, this level of criticism ... feels different.
This is true bulletin board material for Prescott - and yes, he cares about the criticism and has talked of using it as motivation. Does the Cowboys QB care, though, about "moving up a tier'' in somebody's warped rankings? Not compared to how much he cares about Dallas moving up toward Super Bowl contention, no.
