Is Cowboys QB ‘Clutch’? Where’s Dak Prescott Rank?
OXNARD, Calif. - Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has now been the starter since 2016 and while his team hasn't tasted the success many would have hoped for, there has still been plenty of highlights.
But perhaps the thing a quarterback gets judged on most is the ability to be "clutch" in critical moments when everything is on the line. With Prescott currently sitting sixth in wins since 2016, one would imagine that he would have clutch moments.
We say that for the most part, when called upon, Dak has answered the challenge. … though when any team’s season ends in a (playoff) loss, it stings and it sticks in the memory backs.
CBS Sports compiled a list of the top 10 "clutch" quarterbacks in the NFL with Dak coming in at No. 8, above Jared Goff (No. 10) and Aaron Rodgers (No. 9).
"Dak Prescott's stock is down right now after leading the NFL in interceptions last year and failing to put Dallas on his shoulders in back-to-back playoff losses to the 49ers in the last two postseasons," CBS Sports writes.
"He's converted on just 3 of 9 potential game-tying or go-ahead drives in the fourth quarter or overtime of his playoff career. His playoff resume is lacking, but he's been steady throughout the regular season in the clutch department, ranking top 10 in conversion rates in his career and in 2022. "
The quarterbacks ahead of Dak included Jimmy Garoppolo (No. 7), Joe Burrow (No. 6), Josh Allen (No. 5), Lamar Jackson (No. 4), Kirk Cousins (No. 3), Tua Tagovailoa (No. 2) and Patrick Mahomes coming in at No. 1.
So, is Prescott really clutch? And is “clutch” also about winning before the playoffs?
Since 2016, Dak is 12th in fourth-quarter comebacks with 12 and also has 19 game-winning drives, with two coming last season. When comparing his stats to those in the top 10 list, Dak is up there with the best.
He is second behind only Cousins (28) for game-winning drives and is third in fourth-quarter comebacks, behind only Cousins (22) and Mahomes (13).
While the jury might still be out on Dak as a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, he has shown throughout his career that he can engineer a drive to take the lead and get the win.
It might not suit the current media narrative around Dak. And as Cowboys training camp is set to roll here in Oxnard, it’s not yet a front-burner issue as Dallas works to install its new “Texas Coast Offense. But he has shown that more often than not when the game is on the line, he has the ability to lead his team to a win.
A top-10 clutch quarterback? Prescott's so-far stats suggest he is. … as more chances to prove it await.
