Cowboys' Dak Prescott: Top 5 Accuracy in NFL?

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott led the NFL in interceptions last year, but do his accuracy ratings tell a different story?

It has been well-documented that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott had an issue with turnovers in 2022. Last fall, Prescott threw a career-high 15 picks in 12 games and led the NFL in interceptions. Prescott has been vocal about his numbers this offseason and recently stated that he "won't have tipped interceptions" in 2023, after registering four picks from deflections off receivers a season ago. 

The interceptions could be blamed on miscommunication with wideouts, bad luck, or just poor decision-making. Whichever way you slice it, Prescott's turnover numbers last fall were not ideal for a quarterback who signed a four-year $160 million contract in 2021. His accuracy ratings, however, suggest that there is room for improvement.

Pro Football Focus recently charted the most accurate NFL quarterbacks from last season and Prescott is ranked in the top 5 on 'accurate' and 'catchable but inaccurate' throws. Prescott is rated No. 3 in accurate throws (65.5 percent) and No. 1 in catchable but inaccurate (15.3).

According to PFF, Prescott's accuracy suggests that his goal to lower his interceptions in 2023 - as any QB would want to, "tipped'' or otherwise - is achievable.

PFF write:. "Those 15 interceptions are a bit deceiving ... Given that he was the second-most accurate passer in standard accuracy and the top quarterback in avoiding catchable but inaccurate throws, expect that interception total to at least come down in 2023."

Based on the numbers, Prescott has the right stuff to be accurate and the addition via trade of receiver Brandin Cooks this offseason will also help limit Prescott's interceptions ... as will of course the skills of CeeDee Lamb and, if coach Mike McCarthy gets his wish, the new "Texas Coast Offense'' being installed.
