What's In 'Dak's DNA'? Prescott Cowboys Interceptions Were 'Aberrational' - Right?
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott continues to divide opinion after his league-leading interception total of 15 (plus two in the playoffs) last season.
Some in the media have stated that turnovers are "in Dak's DNA," but a quick look at his career statistics will tell you it was an outlier. We at CowboysSI.com feel we've established this (repeatedly!) and Dak himself is pledging to keep his picks in 2023 down to single-digits.
Yet still, there are detractors. Of the QB. And of his coach, Mike McCarthy now the offensive play-caller. But former NFL general manager Mike Tannenbaum agrees with us, stating that he thinks that Dak's interception surge last year was an outlier.
“Very confident,” Tannenbaum said on ESPN’s GetUp of Prescott getting back on track in this category. “I got to work with Brian Schottenheimer, the offensive coordinator in Dallas, back with the Jets. They will be a lot more conservative, (more) risk-adverse, and they have a championship defense.
"Dak threw 17 interceptions, led the league. If they just cut that in half and rely on this championship defense, they will be really hard to beat. I think what we saw was aberrational, and let’s give Mike McCarthy some credit. ...''
With McCarthy and the "West Coast Offense" aimed at lessening the burden on Prescott and less "hero ball," the offense will be more substance, less style than when under the guidance of Kellen Moore - the origin of Tannenbaum's "credit'' remark ... as he's giving "credit'' to McCarthy for moving on from what in many ways was a good thing with Moore.
Coordinator Dan Quinn's defense is one of the best units in the league. If Prescott can lower his interception total - which again, he stated he will - then "complementary football'' can rule.''
And as a result, Tannenbaum's overall evaluation?
"I think they’ll be much more difficult to beat this year,'' he said.
