Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz To Sign With Colts, Predicts PFF
FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys are wrestling with their franchise tag decision, quite aware that if they opt to lock up running back Tony Pollard, they’ll almost surely lose tight end Dalton Schultz.
And to PFF, lose Schultz specifically to the Indianapolis Colts.
Dallas, conventional wisdom suggests, can survive the free agency departure of Schultz - taking nothing away from how he’s developed himself into a weapon - in part because the Cowboys in 2022 added to the roster a pair of rookie tight ends in Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot.
Meanwhile, the Colts are trying to rebuild their offense and find themselves short on weaponry … especially at the position of QB.
But maybe once they figure that out, Schultz fits as a target.
As it stands in Indy, there is a need for dynamic playmakers to help standout back Jonathan Taylor, who stars in the running game and more. The Colts have Michael Pittman Jr., who has demonstrated an "almost'' ability to be a top-level wide receiver, but ... yes, the Colts definitely could certainly use some help in the pass-catching game.
The Colts traditionally get production from their tight ends, and Schultz has absolutely been productive. He earned the right to play on the tag a year ago and made $11 million guaranteed while serving as a safety valve for QB Dak Prescott, and by the numbers, he had a late-season stint during which he was graded out as the third-best tight end in the league at 83.5.
Dallas hasn't announced its tag plan yet, with logic leaning toward Pollard ... which means Schultz might be leaning toward a new address - maybe with the Colts.
