Cowboys NFL Draft Visit: CB Emmanuel Forbes Joining Trevon Diggs & Stephon Gilmore?
FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys believe they loaded up at the top of the depth chart at cornerback with the trade for Colts standout Stephon Gilmore, putting the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year in tandem with Pro Bowl ballhawk Trevon Diggs.
Does Dallas need another?
The Cowboys are continuing their pre-NFL Draft process this week here inside The Star with "30 Visits,'' and this name is an intriguing one: On Tuesday, the Cowboys hosted Mississippi State cornerback Emmanuel Forbes, as first noted by NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.
"Intriguing'' is the word we use for three reasons ...
1 - Forbes is rated as the fourth-best-available cornerback in this year’s draft, according to ESPN’s board, largely based on his own ballhawking skills. He recorded 14 interceptions over three seasons for the Bulldogs, including six in 2022.
Oh, and he's also recorded three touchdowns in two different seasons.
2 - He is lightweight but long, and fast. The 6-1, 166-pound Forbes was tied for fifth at the Combine in the 40, having posted a time of 4.35 seconds.
3 - Forbes surely merits consideration in the range of where Dallas is picking at No. 26; in Todd McShay’s recent two-round mock draft, Forbes is selected by the Giants at No. 25. But ...
Does Dallas need a corner?
The answer is "no,'' but that is the beauty of how they've constructed the roster, capped by the Gilmore trade. The Cowboys do not "need'' Forbes. But the lack of massive holes on the roster frees them to take one if he's highly-ranked on their board ... and if they like what they learn from this week's visit.
