Cowboys QB Will Grier CUT, Reveals 'The Hardest Part'
After trading for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance on Friday, the Dallas Cowboys think they one of best quarterback rooms in the NFL with him getting a chair beside starter Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush and Will Grier.
However, there is a ceiling to how many quarterbacks a team will keep on the 53-man roster, meaning Grier, who was the third-string before Lance came along, was going to be cut. And that has indeed happened on Tuesday, part of Dallas' carving the roster to 53 men.
In his final preseason game with the Cowboys on Saturday against the Las Vegas Raiders, Grier played every offensive snap, knowing they were his last with Dallas. Grier completed 29-of-35 attempts for 305 yards and two touchdowns in the 31-16 victory.
Grier was emotional the second the media asked him questions after the game.
"It's a bittersweet moment," Grier said. "I'm close to a lot of these guys, so ... leaving this place is the hardest part."
Grier explained that the past couple of days have been difficult, but it didn't affect him against the Raiders.
"I was motivated, but it was a tough situation," Grier said. "I just relied on the fact that I know how to play football and I'm good at it, so that's what I did. At the end of the day, it's a numbers thing and it's part of the job I signed up for. I've been through harder things and I'll rebound and be just fine."
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy had high praise for Grier's performance, and wasn't looking forward to the next steps.
"That was by far ... the best (preseason) performance I've seen since 1999," McCarthy said during the post-game press conference. "I'm just so proud of him. This is probably the worst 72 hours of the job that's ahead of us."
Grier has no resentment towards the Cowboys organization and will be rooting for them, especially Prescott, no matter where he plays next.
"I just want to see (Prescott) go and win the Super Bowl and get everything he deserves," the classy Grier said.
