Cowboys Ex Ezekiel Elliott: Still Ranks ‘Top-7' RB with Patriots?
FRISCO - We think it’s fair to say that nobody knows and respects Ezekiel Elliott more than the Dallas Cowboys.
But now along comes a New England Patriots-related evaluation that - if it’s near to being as true as it seems outrageous - would certainly leave a black mark on Dallas’ decision-making process.
Sony Michel, a Patriots first-round pick in 2018 who recently retired at age 28, made an appearance on Up and Adams to share an unusual opinion on Elliott.
In short, Michel believes that New England just signed a one-year, $3 million deal to acquire a “top-seven” back in the NFL.
That is certainly a … well, a bold take by Michel. … for a number of reasons. One of those would be comps to the guys to whom he’s recently served as a backup.
If Elliott - who as a two-time NFL rushing champ was at one time in the conversation as the best running back in the sport - is “top-seven,” how high does that place Dallas’ Tony Pollard and the Pats’ Rhamondre Stevenson?
Elliott can fill a void in the lineup in New England, obviously; that’s why coach Bill Belichick signed Zeke, who can produce as a short-yardage guy and a locker-room leader.
The Cowboys’ self-analysis simply didn’t call for Elliott, 28, to fill any such need here … thus his release, with Dallas not even bothering to issue an offer of any sort to the No. 4 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
We will say this; Cowboys Nation, and Elliott himself, should be proud that his time in Dallas has resulted in this level of respect from peers like Michel.
