Rumor: Dallas Cowboys Could Fire Mike McCarthy as Play-Caller? Jerry Jones Reacts

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys are thinking of firing head coach Mike McCarthy as his own play-caller … because McCarthy’s right-hand man, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer would suddenly be better at it than his boss?

When did these two developments occur? Answer: They haven’t - and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is labeling as "ridiculous'' suggestions to the contrary.

McCarthy, Dak & Schottenheimer

"I'm not panicked,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday, reflecting on the 42-10 loss at San Francisco in Week 5.

And therefore, there is no consideration to a coaching staff shuffle?

“No, (not) in any way. No,'' Jones replied when asked if he’s considered or discussed with McCarthy the idea of having Schottenheimer take over offensive play-calling.

Jones once again reiterated his belief in coach McCarthy, his coaching staff and  quarterback Dak Prescott and the roster as assembled to be capable of getting to the Super Bowl. In fairness, to some degree, the owner at this early stage is left with little else to say. At the same time ... we're five games in. Dallas is 3-2. It's a bit early to start "firing'' people (except on Twitter, of course).

But Jones also noted that it's generally impractical to make such changes at all. And we would note that McCarthy's installation of the "Texas Coast Offense'' and the elevation of the accomplished Schottenheimer to coordinator (replacing the departed Kellen Moore, who now holds that job with a Chargers team that Dallas will oppose on "Monday Night Football'' is simply too new to give up on. ...

'A Crock!' Cowboys Coach Reacts to 49ers Blowout

Especially given that Dallas is, despite the 42-10 loss at the Niners, in the very early stages of seeing how this might work. The loss and the record? That's a disappointment. But it's not yet a disaster.

“We should recognize that we had a very bad outing, and San Francisco had a very good outing,” Jones said. “We should recognize that and call it what it is and not mislead ourselves. But as far as sitting here and saying we should completely change out the towels here, that’s not even in the cards. And it’s really ridiculous.”
