'Heartbreaking!' Cowboys Ex Staffer Suzy Kolber Among ESPN Firings
FRISCO - Suzy Kolber, who early in her career worked for the Dallas Cowboys and rose to become one of the foundational personalities of NFL coverage at ESPN, has joined the notable list of high-profile talent being cut by the network.
The ESPN goodbyes continued Friday as NFL analysts Keyshawn Johnson, Todd McShay, Matt Hasselbeck and Steve Young have been let go, joining Kolber, who started at the network 27 years ago.
"Today I join the many hard-working colleagues who have been laid off," Kolber wrote on Twitter. "Heartbreaking - but 27 years at ESPN was a good run. So grateful for a 38-year career! Longevity for a woman in this business is something I’m especially proud of."
NBA analysts Jeff Van Gundy and Jalen Rose are among the big names losing their jobs as well.
The New York Post, which reported ESPN is letting go around 20 on-air personalities in an effort by The Walt Disney Co. to save millions of dollars and lay off thousands of employees - was first to break the news.
Johnson, who once played for the Cowboys, is in the second year of a five-year, $18 million deal. Host Max Kellerman is also out.
As critics question the decision to fire these staffers while paying monster contracts to hosts like Stephen A. Smith and Pat McAfee, Disney and ESPN are billing the moves as "cost-saving'' that is part of a “strategic reorganization.”
