Cowboys & Michael Gallup: 'Fixed' in Coach Mike McCarthy's West Coast Offense?

The Dallas Cowboys have made no secret of their willingness to get another receiver, but could Mike McCarthy's West Coast Offense help the struggling Michael Gallup?

The Dallas Cowboys need offensive help and with several receivers underperforming this season, the want for an experienced star receiver is what Cowboys Nation - and, we believe, the Cowboys themselves - crave.

But ...

With CowboysSI.com already explaining how head coach Mike McCarthy's West Coast Offense can help "fix" Dak Prescott and his issues, could it also help the struggling Michael Gallup?

Gallup's season was underwhelming after coming off his ACL injury. He finished with a career-low in receiving yards (424), yards per game (30.8), yards per target (5.7), and yards per reception (10.9).

While some struggles were to be expected early as he got back into football shape, many expected Gallup to take off and be a consistent star-level option.

That never happened.

Seven times Gallup totaled two or fewer receptions in his 14 games. That's subpar for a player who has signed a five-year, $57.5 million contract. ... Which brings us to how Dallas can "fix" Gallup.

With the WCO, some of the passing serves as an extension of the run game: quick, short, crisp passes to slant routes and other horizontal routes that take little to no time to develop. ... and can produce yards after the catch.

And what does that have to do with Gallup?

Gallup is good at is slant routes. His size and reach and gutsiness makes it so.

Previous to the injury, Gallup was a player who could "stretch the field.'' That doesn't have to go away, but ...

Could this offense get him back to somewhere near his 2019 output of 66 catches, 1,107 yards, and six touchdowns?

Amid talk of trading for DeAndre Hopkins, Tee Higgins, and even Odell Beckham Jr., along with drafting a receiver in the first round, getting Gallup involved could prove beneficial with an answer already in-house.

The talent is still there ... And while the WCO is largely being installed to help Prescott improve, we think McCarthy and his new offensive scheme can do the same for Michael Gallup.
