Dallas Cowboys 'Four Horsemen': What's Coach Brian Schottenheimer Expecting from TE's?
The Dallas Cowboys tight end room has a relatively youthful look. After Dalton Schultz departed via free agency to the Houston Texans, it will be "tight end by committee" this season.
After being a Cowboys coaching analyst last season, new offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer says the tight end room has him excited him when talking on his new role.
"That room ... was one of the things I was excited about," Schottenheimer said. "Watching from afar last year, looking at Jake [Ferguson] come in, Fergie having the success that he did, Henny [Peyton Hendershot] ... Sean McKeon didn't get enough credit; he's a really good football player."
With a young tight end group that combined had just 288 receiving yards and four touchdowns, there is room for growth. Adding in Michigan's Luke Schoonmaker will give Dallas another threat in both the passing and running game.
Outside of The Star, some doubt the ability of this current crop of tight ends to pick up the slack left by Schultz, as he totaled the second-highest receiving yards (577) last season behind CeeDee Lamb.
But for Schottenheimer, despite the youthful look to the room, they are all expected to do their jobs and make plays. With Ferguson at the top of the depth chart, they'll still rotate guys and of course use multiple tight end formations as well.
"We want to roll tight ends through, get guys involved in the game," Schottenheimer said. "It's an exciting group, very coachable. I talk about the classroom; those guys are on top of their stuff. They play fast, make quick decisions. ... We're expecting big things.''
Dubbed (by themselves) "The Four Horsemen," the group has started offseason preparations well, and they will look to establish themselves as viable options for head coach Mike McCarthy's offense during training camp.
