Cowboys Free Agency: Source Reveals Plan For DT Gerald McCoy

There are questions about age and about finance, but for both McCoy and the Cowboys, there are no questions about their goal to reunite.

FRISCO - Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy never quite got the chance to prove himself on the field in 2020, as he was injured during the first padded practice of training camp here at The Star. But in rehabbing from his quad injury - which caused the Cowboys to release him and escape the $6 million APY he'd just signed - McCoy proved himself in other ways.

And that's among the reason a source close to the situation tells CowboysSI.com that Dallas and McCoy are planning on a 2021 reunion.

McCoy was signed to a three-year contract that included an injury escape clause due to an existing issue with his quadriceps. ... and that is exactly where he sustained the injury, thus activating the clause.

But there were no hard feelings, McCoy, even from his hospital bed, pitched in as a mentor to young teammates who he'd literally just met.

McCoy is 33, and it's not known just how far away he's moved from his days as a first-round pick and a six-time Pro Bowler. But Dallas has a need for experience at defensive tackle - the potential of youngsters Trysten Hill and Neville Gallimore aside - and especially now that the Cowboys are flipping back to a 4-3 defense under new coordinator Dan Quinn, McCoy makes sense.

Antwaun Woods as a 1-tech is a helper, too, but McCoy's history as an upfield play-maker is something the Cowboys hope is still in his toolbox.

McCoy is also a "local'' guy, and so overall, the fit is logical. There are questions about age and about finance, but for both McCoy and the Cowboys, there are no questions about their goal to reunite.
