Cowboys Target Elijah Wilkinson Signs with Cardinals; Who Plays Left Guard?
FRISCO - Elijah Wilkinson is no longer a possibility for the Dallas Cowboys.
The Arizona Cardinals have signed Elijah Wilkinson, who started all nine games in which he played this past season for the Atlanta Falcons.
Wilkinson visited the Cowboys a few days ago, but ultimately chose to sign with the Cardinals.
With Wilkinson off the table, the Cowboys must go back to the drawing board.
In Dallas, the Cowboys employ a trio of top-grade tackles in Tyron Smith, Terence Steele and Tyler Smith. There is a possible vacancy at left guard, meanwhile, and talk of experimenting with Steele moving there.
There is also the recent signing of another vet and part-time starter at guard and tackle, the former New York Jets and Falcons blocker Chuma Edoga.
And of course there is owner Jerry Jones’ mention of the idea of drafting a starting left guard, which is where someone like TCU standout Steve Avila could fit in with Dallas, which owns the No. 26 pick in the NFL Draft.
The sexiest option of the bunch could be signing former Denver Broncos guard Dalton Risner, who remains unsigned after three weeks of free agency.
The problem with the Risner option? Spotrac projects his value at meaning he gets a contract of four years and $38 million - $9.5 million per year.
That's not happening in Dallas for the 6-5, 312-pound Risner, a second-round pick in 2019 who has established himself as a full-time starter in the league. Indeed, we have one team that ranked him entering the spring as the No. 4 guard in free agency. On top of blocking ability, Risner's ability to stay healthy might be his greatest gift to Dallas - missing just two games over his first four seasons in Denver.
But instead? Probably no Risner, not at that price. And definitely no Wilkinson.
