Cowboys Free Agency: Tony Pollard vs. Texans' Devin Singletary; Who's PFF's 'Ideal Fit'?
LAS VEGAS - Houston Texans running back Devin Singletary, who totaled over 1,000 yards from scrimmage and averaged 4.4 yards per touch in 2023 while helping to juice up that offense, is a free agent.
So is Tony Pollard of the Dallas Cowboys, who had what for him was a disappointing 2023.
What comes next? PFF believes the Texans to be an 'ideal landing spot' for Pollard ... at least as viewed through a fantasy football prism.
"Real football'' and "fantasy football'' don't always correlate, though here we can see the attraction. Houston's offense could be on the verge of a real explosion led by a star quarterback in C.J. Stroud and a fine young offensive coordinator in Bobby Slowik.
But we don't get the "ideal'' part; there is no such thing as "ideal'' - especially not in the case of Pollard, who coming off a leg injury sustained a year ago in the playoffs ended up rushing for just over 1,000 yards in 17 games, with his production actually dropping across the board from 2022, when he was splitting carries with Ezekiel Elliott.
All-In' Cowboys Should Add Henry and Hop
In that regard, how much better is Pollard than Singletary? Especially if Pollard projections are right and he's about to earn around $7.5 million APY?

The running back market in recent years says the likes of Pollard and Singletary are unlikely to make that much. The production from the two players says that the team that waits it out and settles for the "second-best'' of this pair might end up being better off for it, cap-wise.
Right now is the time when media and fans get excited about the idea of a "new toy.'' Pollard would be that in Houston. Heck, Singletary might be that in Dallas. But overpaying based on the idea that somebody is "an ideal fit'' is a foolish game ... in fantasy football and in real football, too.
