Do Cowboys Rank Stephon Gilmore as 'Top Free Agent' Target on Defense?

The Dallas Cowboys are entering a new era on defense with the hiring of defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. Where does free agent Stephon Gilmore fit?

As the Dallas Cowboys usher in a new era on defense with the hiring - or re-hiring if you wish - of defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, things could look significantly different.

Zimmer has admitted he's taking over an already-stacked defense from Dan Quinn, who departed to be the head coach of the NFC East rival Washington Commanders, but some of the talent could be gone next season.

Of the 16 total names that could be free agents when the NFL's new league year starts on March 13, eight of those guys play D, with seven playing significant roles last season.

Stephon Gilmore 1

ESPN labels corner Stephon Gilmore as the team's No. 1 internal free agent target.

"There is no question the Cowboys would like him to return, and he has mentioned he wants to return. The question -- like everything -- will be price. He made $10 million last year. Would he take much less to return? Would another team offer him more? He turns 34 in September but keeps himself in top shape. He had two interceptions and 13 pass breakups last season. He is excellent in the locker room for a defense that needs a veteran presence."

'Hey, Kool-Aid!' Cowboys Draft Gilmore Replacement in New Mock

If the price tag is too high, Dallas could take aim at Gilmore's replacement in April's draft, or promote from within. Also a factor: Gilmore's shoulder surgery; can Dallas fully commit to an older player in March when he might not be ready until August?

And there is this: With Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland under contract, just how much does Dallas need to prioritize "Gilly'' in the first place?

Other defensive free agents on the Cowboys' roster include Gilmore's fellow cornerbacks Jourdan Lewis and Noah Igbinoghene, defensive ends Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler Jr., safety Jayron Kearse, defensive tackles Neville Gallimore and Johnathan Hankins, and special-teams standout C.J. Goodwin.
