'Damn Good!' Cowboys Coach McCarthy Reacts to RB Competition

The Dallas Cowboys' new-look running back room has several question marks hanging over it, but Mike McCarthy has lofty expectations for the group.

The Dallas Cowboys running back situation has been front-of-mind ever since the decision was made to part ways with Ezekiel Elliott. With Tony Pollard usurping Elliott as the No. 1 back, just who would work behind Tony in the depth chart was a big question.

Rico Dowdle, Malik Davis, and feel-good story Deuce Vaughn all harbor intentions of claiming the No. 2 spot. After the Cowboys 22-14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Game 2 of their preseason schedule, coach Mike McCarthy had some high praise for a young group of players putting their best foot forward.

“These young running backs really pour it up in there, and we just ... would like to get them some more opportunities," McCarthy said. "We got to make sure we got a really good evaluation this upcoming week against the Raiders. This young group has a chance to be pretty damn good.”

With McCarthy stating he needs a "good evaluation" of the running backs might hint that the No. 2 spot is still up for grabs.

Against Seattle, Dowdle (eight carries, 38 yards, 4.8 yards per rush), Davis (eight carries, 32 yards, 4.0 yards per rush), and Vaughn, who totaled five carries for 14 yards and a wonderful touchdown run, all put forth their case.

How will snaps in the Las Vegas Raiders game (Saturday at AT&T Stadium) be distributed? Dallas is still working through that. But NFL Cutdown Day is August 29. The clock is ticking. Will it be Rico, Malik, or Deuce who grabs their chance?

It's a "damn good'' battle to the finish line for the Dallas Cowboys' runners.
