Cowboys Hiring ‘Coach Prime’? Jerry Answers ‘The Deion Question’

Can Cowboys owner Jerry Jones envision Deion Sanders making the leap and coaching in the NFL?

FRISCO - Jerry Jones has himself a huge fan in Deion Sanders, who not too long ago told us in an exclusive interview, “I love Jerry and I tremendously love that whole Jones family.”

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys owner is a keen observer of what “Coach Prime” is up to nowadays, as he watched every single play of the University of Colorado’s two-OT win over Colorado State this weekend, a continuation of the Hall of Fame superstar’s center-stage takeover,

Maybe naturally, after Dallas’ 30-10 win on Sunday over the New York Jets, reporters tossed “The Deion Question” at Jones.

Deion,” Jerry said, is “a hell of a coach.”

And … Can Jerry envision Deion making the leap and coaching in the NFL?

Jones smartly sidestepped the question by saying with praise, “He influences people. And of course that’s part of it in the NFL. But I don’t want to go there because you know where that starts going, every which way.”

Yup. “Every which way,” including the inevitable questions, no matter how groundless, about whether the Cowboys should fire incumbent coach Mike McCarthy in favor of the colorful Sanders.

As it happens, McCarthy has opened the 2023 NFL season with an undefeated record, so only a provocateur or a slappy would suggest a change,

And speaking of change? CowboysSI.com was the first media outlet ever to ask Sanders about an eventual jump to the pros. He told us “no” … and he’s never altered his stance.

"I don't have any desire or ambition to coach in the NFL," Sanders told CowboysSI.com in February of 2022. "I have a problem with men getting their checks and not doing their jobs. I would be too tough as a coach in the NFL because I still have those old-school attributes."
