'The Worst 24 Hours!' Does Cowboys Hunter Luepke Make 53-Man Roster?
Mike McCarthy wanted to see more from Hunter Luepke on Saturday night as the Dallas Cowboys hosted the Las Vegas Raiders at AT&T Stadium in their preseason finale, and he saw all he needed to.
In the 31-16 win, Lukepe starred as he finished his night's work with 58 rushing yards and 60 receiving yards, along with a touchdown from 20 total touches.
The former North Dakota State Bison was all gas, no brakes as he looked to stake his claim for a roster spot with the final cull looming.
For coach McCarthy, Luepke was all he thought he would be.
“Luepke was really impressive, he did some little things just to fit his run style, and I thought he really delivered,” McCarthy said. “He was excellent out of the backfield, too.”
Luepke made a name for himself in college as a dual-purpose back, and at AT&T Stadium, he was used in both facets by new play-caller Dak Prescott.
Late in the second quarter, Will Grier took charge of a nine-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a Luepke touchdown as he caught two passes for 44 yards to stamp his authority on the contest.
Hunter knew that he was going to be in for a big night, and he made sure he gave it his all.
“Coaches talked to me a little bit and said they wanted to get me more reps this week, so I just took that and ran with it,” Luepke said. “Every time I was on the field, I was going to give it my best effort; it’s what I always do.”
With roster cuts now happening all over the league, many eyes will be glued to see who gets trimmed from the squad, with the running back situation now fascinating.
Tony Pollard leads the room, but then we have Deuce Vaughn, Rico Dowdle, and now potentially Luepke, as all have had impressive preseasons.
Can Dallas fit four backs on the roster?
With McCarthy calling the next phase "the worst 72 hours of the job" as the roster gets cut from 90 down to 53, we won't have to wait long to find out.
